Limerick’s Biggest Street Party!

On Tuesday July 12th a massive street party was held as a thank-you to the public for its support of the Limerick European Capital of Culture 2020 bid.

Mayor of Limerick, Councillor Kieran O’Hanlon, issued an open invitation to join the festivities. People were invited to bring the family to the full day, food and carnival spectacular which was the culmination of Limerick's 2020 bid efforts, with surprises around every street corner. The party was bigger than any celebration Limerick had ever seen.

Deputy Director of the Limerick2020 bid team, Sheila Deegan said “We wanted to throw a big street party for the people of Limerick, for everyone who played a part in the magical journey we have had so far. We have achieved an awful lot and asked people to enjoy the party with us.” 

Still (the) Barbarians In The Morning


Cleeve’s Condensed Milk Factory

Wrapping up this year’s inspiring EVA exhibition, Still (the) Barbarians in the Morning offered you a chance to view the exhibit with a leisurely cup of coffee and a full day of celebrations, with family friendly tours of this year’s Irish Biennial of Contemporary Art EVA exhibited at the Cleeve’s Milk Factory and there also was a massive Limerick-style surprise at 11am!

Boardwalk Street Food & Live Music

Limerick’s weekly Boardwalk Street Food brought world cuisine Shannonside. With mouth-watering dishes and live music from Music Generation (including a surprise act) tasty foodie treats could be enjoyed from the various stalls while the tunes created a relaxed festival atmosphere.

Culture & Chips Took To The Streets

Culture & Chips Took To The Streets in conjunction with Limerick 2020 and threw a street party of food, culture and performance. There was also a World Recipe Exchange event which explored the traditions of tea and coffee making. Salon du Chat also hosted two sittings of chat without the chit and speed debating. The conversation specialists brought you a brand new menu, fresh coffee, a select whine list and some extra special treats.

Some of the city’s most talented musicians brought their talent to the streets. Music Generation aims to put music at the heart of young people’s lives across the city! Running programmes based on inclusion and self-expression they have produced some of the city’s most extraordinary young performers! These talented musicians, singers and performers took to the streets of Limerick and brought their energy and talent to the people.

With an eclectic mix of home grown, local talent in one of Limerick’s brand new public spaces, there was a host of groups bringing sweet music to the streets.

Still (the) Barbarians: A Symposium

This symposium was the culmination of this year’s EVA exhibition, Still (the) Barbarians. Bringing together key speakers and EVA International artists to talk about how artists respond to postcolonial legacies, the symposium also looked at the lasting impact that colonialism has had on the Irish language. This two day event featured a keynote lecture by Caoimhín Mac Giolla Léith, performances by Yong Sun Gullach, and Larry Achiampong and David Blandy. Other participants included Mary Evans, Professor Luke Gibbons, Dr Declan Long, John Logan, Catalina Lozano, Dr Aislinn O'Donnell, Grant Watson and a screening of Our Kind (2016) by Alan Phelan.
